Castell'Arquato (village and fortress)
One of Italy's most beautiful medieval villages: the Visconti fortress with breathtaking views, a monumental square and lively cafés and wine bars.
One of Italy's most beautiful medieval villages, Castell'Arquato sits on a hill overlooking the Arda valley with a stunning monumental square. The 14th-century Rocca Viscontea (Visconti Fortress) dominates the skyline and can be visited (entrance around €5) — the views from the top are exceptional. Below the fortress, the Piazza del Municipio is flanked by the Romanesque Collegiata church and the medieval Palazzo del Podestà. The village is lively with cafés, wine bars and small shops. Allow 2–3 hours for a thorough visit. Combine with the Geological Museum for the full experience. Free parking below the village walls.
