In the footsteps of Verdi
The land where Giuseppe Verdi was born, grew up, and to which he always returned lies less than half an hour from the Podere. This half-day itinerary takes you through the key places of the Maestro's life — from the humble birthplace in Roncole to the charming town of Busseto — combining music history with the gastronomy of the Bassa Parmense, the land of culatello.
All stops are concentrated within a few kilometres of each other in the Busseto area. The drive from the Podere takes about 25 minutes via the A1 motorway (exit Fidenza) or 30 minutes on the scenic Via Emilia. Total driving within the itinerary is minimal once you've arrived.
The stops
-
1. Verdi's birthplace at Roncole
9:30 AM – 10:15 AM (allow 25 min drive from the Podere)
Begin at the birthplace of Giuseppe Verdi in Roncole Verdi (about 25 minutes from the Podere). The house is modest and moving — eight simple rooms with a multimedia tour that tells the story of a genius born in the humblest of circumstances. The visit is self-guided and takes about 30 minutes. Across the road, don't miss the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, where the four-year-old Verdi first touched an organ. Admission €6 (or combined ticket €22 for multiple Verdi sites). -
2. Busseto: Teatro Verdi and the historic centre
10:30 AM – 12:30 PM
From Roncole, drive five minutes to the centre of Busseto. Head straight to Piazza Verdi to visit the Teatro Verdi — a jewel-box opera house built inside a medieval fortress. Guided tours run every 30 minutes and last about 30 minutes. The theatre's story is irresistible: the townspeople built it to honour Verdi, who opposed the project and refused to attend the inauguration. After the theatre, stroll through the historic centre. Stop at the Salsamenteria Baratta — a historic delicatessen since 1873 that Verdi himself used to visit — for a taste of culatello di Zibello, the king of cured meats produced only in this area. -
3. Lunch in the land of culatello
12:30 PM – 2:30 PM
Busseto sits in the heart of the Bassa Parmense, one of Italy's finest food territories. This is the only place in the world where authentic culatello di Zibello DOP is produced — cured in the foggy river cellars of the Po lowlands. The town has several good restaurants and trattorias where you can try culatello, prosciutto di Parma, anolini in brodo and other local specialities. Take your time: a slow lunch in Busseto is part of the Verdi experience. After lunch, if Villa Pallavicino is open, dedicate an hour to the Verdi Museum (check bussetolive.com — currently closed for renovation). Otherwise, head back to the Podere through the flat countryside of the Bassa, the same landscape Verdi looked at every day of his life.
