Stirone and Piacenziano Regional Park

The closest natural attraction: easy trails along a fossil-rich river between woods and clay badlands. Suitable for all ages, including young children.

The Stirone and Piacenziano Regional Park is the closest natural attraction to Podere Montevalle — the nearest access point at Scipione Ponte is just 3.9 km away. The park follows the course of the Stirone torrent between the provinces of Parma and Piacenza, protecting a landscape of extraordinary geological interest: the river has carved into clay and rock to reveal fossil layers spanning millions of years, from the Pliocene when this area was a tropical sea bed.

The trails are easy and suitable for all ages, including young children. Well-marked paths follow the river bed and climb gently through the surrounding hills. In spring, the meadows are full of wildflowers and wild orchids. In autumn, the oak and elm woods along the river turn beautiful colours. Even in winter, the stark landscape of the clay badlands (calanchi) has a dramatic, austere beauty.

The best access from the Podere is via Scipione Ponte, on the road to Salsomaggiore. From there, a pleasant trail follows the Stirone north through woods and open fields, with several spots where you can see fossils embedded in the riverbanks. The other main access is at San Nicomede near Fidenza.

Bring sturdy shoes (hiking boots after rain — the clay gets slippery), water in summer, and allow 1.5 to 3 hours depending on how far you walk. Dogs are welcome on a lead. Access is free.
