The stops
-
1. Fossil hunting along the Stirone
9:00 AM – 10:15 AM
Start the morning with a walk along the Stirone river in the Regional Park. The trail from Scipione Ponte is easy, flat and shaded — perfect for young legs. Children love hunting for fossils in the riverbank rocks: you'll find shells, sea creatures and plant imprints that are millions of years old. Bring sturdy shoes (the path can be muddy after rain) and a water bottle. Allow about an hour for a relaxed walk, then head back to the car for the next stop. -
2. Gropparello Fairy Tale Park (or Masone Labyrinth)
11:00 AM – 1:00 PM (allow 25–45 min drive from the Stirone)
After the Stirone, you have two options depending on how far you want to drive. **Option A — Gropparello Castle** (about 45 minutes by car on scenic hill roads): the Fairy Tale Park is a magical forest where children meet characters from medieval legends — knights, witches, elves — in an interactive adventure lasting about 2 hours. The castle itself, perched above a dramatic gorge, impresses adults too. Book in advance on the website, as sessions have limited places and are typically only on weekends and holidays. **Option B — Masone Labyrinth** (about 25 minutes by car): the world's largest bamboo labyrinth near Fontanellato is closer and easier to reach, and an adventure children and adults enjoy equally. Either option fills the late morning beautifully. -
3. Lunch: torta fritta and gelato
1:30 PM – 3:00 PM
After the morning adventure, head for a family-friendly lunch. If you chose Gropparello (Option A), stop at a trattoria on the way back — the drive back takes about 40 minutes and you'll pass through the beautiful Val d'Arda. Trattoria Cavallo – La Tortafritteria in Scipione Ponte is worth the detour: children love torta fritta (fried dough) served with cured meats — it's the Emilian equivalent of pizza, and just as irresistible. The restaurant also has a gelateria and a small shop with local products. If you chose the Masone Labyrinth (Option B), the complex has its own restaurant where you can eat before heading home — much more convenient, as it saves the return drive.
