This half-day itinerary is designed for families with children who want an engaging mix of nature and adventure. It works best from spring to autumn, when the outdoor attractions are fully open. Both options start from the Podere and you'll be back in time for a late lunch or early afternoon rest.

Le tappe

  1. 1. Fossil hunting along the Stirone

    9:00 AM – 10:30 AM
    Fossil hunting along the Stirone
Start the morning with a walk along the Stirone river in the Regional Park. The trail from Scipione Ponte is easy, flat and shaded — perfect for young legs. Children love hunting for fossils in the riverbank rocks: you'll find shells, sea creatures and plant imprints that are millions of years old. Bring sturdy shoes (the path can be muddy after rain) and a water bottle. Allow about 1.5 hours for a relaxed walk.
  2. 2. Gropparello Fairy Tale Park (or Masone Labyrinth)

    11:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Gropparello Fairy Tale Park (or Masone Labyrinth)
After the Stirone, drive to Gropparello Castle (about 40 minutes) for the Fairy Tale Park experience. Children enter a magical forest where they meet characters from medieval legends — knights, witches, elves — in an interactive adventure that lasts about 2 hours. The castle itself, perched above a dramatic gorge, impresses adults too. Book in advance on the website, as sessions have limited places and are typically only on weekends and holidays. Alternatively, if Gropparello isn't open, head to the Masone Labyrinth near Fontanellato (30 minutes from the Podere) — the world's largest bamboo labyrinth is an adventure children and adults enjoy equally.
  3. 3. Lunch: torta fritta and gelato

    1:00 PM – 2:30 PM
    Lunch: torta fritta and gelato
On the way back, stop at Trattoria Cavallo – La Tortafritteria in Scipione Ponte for a family-friendly lunch. Children love torta fritta (fried dough) served with cured meats — it's the Emilian equivalent of pizza, and just as irresistible. The restaurant also has a gelateria and a small shop with local products. If you chose the Masone Labyrinth option, the labyrinth complex has its own restaurant where you can eat before heading home.
