Meli Lupi Fortress of Soragna

Meli Lupi Fortress of Soragna

An elegant moated castle, uninterrupted home of the Meli Lupi family since 1385. Sumptuous rooms with original Renaissance-to-19th-century furnishings. Combine with the nearby Parmigiano Reggiano Museum.

The Rocca Meli Lupi is one of the most elegant castles in the Parma area — a moated fortress that has been the uninterrupted home of the Meli Lupi family since 1385. Unlike many Italian castles that have become museums or hotels, Soragna's Rocca is still a private residence, and visiting it feels like being welcomed into a noble home rather than touring an exhibition.

Guided tours lead through a remarkable sequence of rooms furnished with original pieces from the Renaissance to the 19th century: the Sala delle Grottesche (with 16th-century frescoes), the Gallery of the Knights of Malta, the grand dining room, and the elegant 18th-century apartments. The quality of the furnishings — paintings, tapestries, Murano glass, period furniture — is exceptional and continuous, without the gaps that plague most historic residences.

Just outside the castle, the town of Soragna is home to the Museo del Parmigiano Reggiano, housed in a former cheese factory — a fascinating stop for anyone interested in this iconic product. The combination of castle and cheese museum makes for a very satisfying half-day outing.

Tip: easily combined with Fontanellato (Rocca Sanvitale and Masone Labyrinth, both within 10 km). Together they make an excellent full-day itinerary of castles and culture in the Parma lowlands.

Guided tours on weekends and by appointment. Check castellidelducato.it for schedule. Admission around €8.
