Grazzano Visconti (Vigolzone)

Grazzano Visconti (Vigolzone)

A unique neo-medieval village in Italy, rebuilt in the early 1900s by Duke Giuseppe Visconti di Modrone. Artisan workshops, theatrical courtyards, seasonal markets and the Visconti Castle with its park.

Grazzano Visconti is unique in Italy: a village entirely rebuilt in neo-medieval style in the early 1900s at the wish of Giuseppe Visconti di Modrone, father of the famous film director Luchino Visconti. The duke, owner of the castle and surrounding lands, decided to transform the small Piacenza village into an idealised medieval settlement, with stone and brick houses, artisan workshops, loggias and courtyards decorated with wrought iron and coats of arms.

The result is a theatrical and fascinating village where the medieval architecture — though a reconstruction — creates a unique atmosphere. Narrow lanes open onto small squares with fountains, facades are decorated with frescoes and wrought-iron signs, and shops sell local crafts: ceramics, ironwork, food products and traditional sweets.

The Visconti Castle, of 14th-century origin, is the heart of the village. The original building dates to 1395, built for Giovanni Anguissola; it later passed to the Visconti family in the 15th century. The surrounding park is one of the most beautiful in the area, with centuries-old trees, a small lake and an Italian garden. The castle is private and opens to the public only on special occasions — check the website.

Grazzano is particularly lively during seasonal markets and events: the Christmas market (December), the Herb and Flower Festival (spring), medieval re-enactments and Halloween. On these occasions the village fills with stalls, performances and costumed characters. But it's worth visiting on quieter days too, when the atmosphere is peaceful and the shops are open without the crowds.

Allow 1–2 hours for a visit, longer if you'd like to have lunch at one of the village restaurants. Free parking just outside the walls.

Free entry to the village. Castle opens only on special occasions. Markets at Christmas, spring and Halloween.
