Bardi Castle (Ceno Valley)

Bardi Castle (Ceno Valley)

A dramatic fortress on a massive spur of red jasper above the Ceno valley. Ghost legends, imposing ramparts, and sweeping mountain views. The furthest but most spectacular castle in our guide.

Bardi Castle is one of the most dramatically positioned fortresses in northern Italy — an immense mass of red stone perched on a spur of jasper rock 600 metres above the confluence of the Ceno and Noveglia rivers. The fortress has dominated the Ceno valley since at least the 9th century, and its current form dates largely to the 14th–15th centuries when it was a stronghold of the Landi family.

The scale of the castle is impressive: walls up to four metres thick, massive towers, a huge courtyard, dungeons, and a series of museums inside — including a museum of wildlife, a museum of rural life of the valley, and temporary exhibitions. But the main attraction is the castle itself and its atmosphere. Walking through the empty rooms and along the ramparts, with the valley plunging away on all sides, is an unforgettable experience.

Bardi is also famous for its ghost legend: the story of Moroello, a knight who threw himself from the tower when he saw his beloved Soleste embracing a soldier he mistook for a rival (it was in fact her brother). Soleste, upon learning of his death, died of grief. Moroello's ghost is reportedly one of the most documented in Italy — the castle has hosted paranormal investigations and atmospheric night tours play on the legend.

The town of Bardi itself is worth exploring: a small mountain settlement with stone houses, a couple of good trattorias serving hearty Appennine cooking (mushroom pasta, polenta, game), and genuine mountain air.

Tip: Bardi is the furthest destination in this guide (about 70 km, 1 hour 15 minutes). It's best suited to a full day trip, possibly combined with a drive through the scenic Ceno valley. The road itself is beautiful, winding through chestnut forests and small villages. Medieval re-enactments are held in summer.

Open daily in summer, weekends in winter. Check castellidelducato.it for hours. Admission around €7. Allow a full day for the trip.
