Sanvitale Fortress of Fontanellato
Elegant moated castle with precious Parmigianino frescoes and a 19th-century Camera Ottica that projects a live image of the square below.
An elegant moated castle in the town of Fontanellato, about 25 minutes from the Podere. The Rocca Sanvitale houses a precious cycle of frescoes by Parmigianino (the Myth of Diana and Actaeon, 1524) in a small private room — one of the finest Mannerist paintings in Emilia. The castle also contains the 19th-century Camera Ottica, an optical device that projects a live image of the town square. The surrounding town has a pleasant arcaded centre with good cafés and gelaterias. Combine with a visit to the nearby Masone Labyrinth (5 km away). Small entrance fee, allow 1 hour.
